Tarot and qimen are powerful, versatile divination systems. Both of them allow you to answer difficult questions that require a higher perspective. But how do you know which to choose?

As practitioners of tarot and qimen dunjia, we will share with you the most appropriate use cases for both methods.

When You Should Use Tarot

Tarot is perhaps the most well-known divination method in the world today. Think of a fortune teller, and chances are, you’ll think of a tarot reader.

Tarot is wonderfully versatile. By tapping into universal archetypes, it empowers to reader to uncover information on a wide variety of subjects. A querant who asks the right questions will be able to dig deeply and broadly, and develop a fuller understanding of the situation.

Here are some situations when you should use tarot:

You need a quick answer to a simple question

For simple, straightforward questions, a one-card reading is ideal. You don’t have to dig deep into the situation if you don’t need to. Just draw the card, read the card, done.

You need to dig deep

Should the situation call for it, however, tarot gives you the option to explore deeper currents. For example, you can use it to understand the psychological state of yourself or someone else. Or you can discover recent events, unknown to you, that contributed to the current situation. At a higher level, you could read the dynamics and interactions between the cards in a spread to gain even more insight into the situation.

You want to explore

Sometimes, what seems to be a simple situation may just be the tip of the iceberg. Or you are trying to explore a situation from multiple facets. As new information comes in, you adjust your perspective, and your spreads with it.

With tarot, exploring a topic is relatively painless. For every aspect of a situation you want to uncover, either draw a new card or a new spread. For instance, you may want to know whether you are compatible with someone you are interested in. The results prompt you to investigate recent events that led to your current attraction. Then you may wonder how you can build a better relationship with him. By treating this train of thought as three separate questions, and answering each of them with a separate spread, you can find the insight you need to guide your decision.

You have many questions

You want to explore one topic in depth. Or maybe you want to answer a bunch of questions at once. With tarot, it is as simple as drawing as many spreads as you have questions. Every spread is a fresh reading. They can be connected to the previous reading, but they don’t have to be if you don’t need to be.

You need to choose from multiple paths

You are at a decision point. Before you are two, three, or more paths. Which one will you choose?

With tarot, exploring them is painless. You simply pull the appropriate number of cards for each path and interpret the results. Then you select the path that resonates with your life goals.

You want a focal point for meditation

Every moment is an opportunity to learn—if you can see it. A well-crafted tarot meditation spread gives you a focal point for meditation. It shows you the life lessons you should learn, and how you can integrate them into your life. When the themes reflected in the spread appear in your life, you know that it is time for you to put in the work.

When You Should NOT Use Tarot

Tarot has many strengths. At the same time, there are some situations where you would be better served by using other divination methods. Here are some examples.

You need to know timing and direction

Tarot does not natively provide a solution for answering questions that have to do with timing and direction. You can work around this by attempting to create a spread that covers time frames and directions. However, sometimes the cards can produce ambiguous results, and may not give you the answers you need.

For timing and direction-related divination questions, we prefer to use qimen dunjia instead. Timing and directions are hardcoded into the methodology. Instead of trying to figure out what a certain card means, we simply have to look for the appropriate palace and the timing and/or direction it is associated with.

You want to discover everything about yourself

Tarot is a wonderful tool for self-discovery—but people are complex. It’s fine if you just want to know a single aspect of yourself. However, should you want to discover everything there is to know about yourself, using tarot usually leads to massive and unwieldy spreads.

With our bazi qimen destiny profile, we can create a comprehensive destiny profile with just two charts. Instead of pulling dozens of cards and trying to see how they all fit together, we simply consult the charts and analyze how the components interact with each other.

You lack confidence in your sensitivity and intuition

Not everyone is cut out to be a tarot reader, and that is perfectly fine. The most fundamental skill of a tarot reader is to sense and draw the right card that answers the question. Some people—even highly attuned psychics—don’t have the sensitivity for that.

The cards are tools. They are a bridge between the reader’s intuition and the Universe. When drawing a card, the reader is selecting the image that best represents the signals she is receiving from the universe. Someone who isn’t natively attuned to using psychic tools like cards will have a hard time doing this.

Fortunately, there are other divination methods out there. Qimen dunjia, for example, is not reliant on tools. Qimen maps the energies of a moment. You don’t have to be especially sensitive to calculate a qimen chart. In fact, there is free software out there that helps you generate a qimen chart easily and effortlessly. Instead of fussing over whether you should draw one card or another, you simply generate the chart, and interpret what you see.

When You Should Use Qimen

Qimen dunjia is an ancient art of Chinese astrology that dates to the Warring States period. Employed by emperors and generals, it shaped the execution of policies and strategies across centuries.

Qimen was once a secret art. Today, its use is easy and commonplace. When a question comes to mind, all you have to do is to use a qimen dunjia app to generate a chart. Some can be found on app stores. Others are available for free on the Internet.

During the Battle of Red Cliffs, it is said that strategist Zhuge Liang used qimen dunjia to forecast the direction of the wind. Armed with this knowledge, he deployed a fleet of fire ships, destroying the fleet of his enemy Cao Cao.

This story tells us the purpose of qimen dunjia: to support strategic execution and achieve results. With this in mind, these are the best times to use qimen dunjia.

You need to develop a strategy

You are committed to a decision. The question isn’t whether you should do something, but how to do it. Qimen dunjia shows you how. Simply carry out the steps described in the outcome palace that supports the asker palace.

Sometimes you need more information. For example, if you’re a business owner, you’ll want to know what your competition is doing too. Qimen can reveal critical insights into your competition, as well as any other relevant information that might support your strategy.

If you already have a strategy in mind, qimen can help you assess it before committing to it. If the strategy has a high chance of success, the chart will give you the confidence you need to act. If it doesn’t, the chart will provide a suitable alternative.

With tarot, you would have to figure out the right questions to ask and piece the puzzle together. Qimen reveals the entire situation and tells you upfront what you need to do in a single chart. This is the greatest strength of qimen dunjia.

You want to understand the situation at a glance

Every palace within a qimen chart contains a wealth of information. By reading the palaces relevant to the stituation, you can immediately grasp the situation at a glance. When we carry out qimen readings for clients, it usually takes us longer to type out the report than it does to interpret the chart.

Each palace contains a surprising depth of nuance. From timing to actions to potential outcomes, a skilled qimen reader will be able to analyse the entirety of the situation and take the next step.

You need to identify timing and direction

You’re looking for a mentor. Or you’re searching for a lost item. Or trying to find a missing person. With a single qimen chart, you can immediately identify where you need to go to find what you’re looking for, and when you can expect to find it. You just need to look at the direction associated with the outcome palace and head off.

Qimen is the study of time and space. Anything to do with timing and direction can be addressed with qimen. With tarot, you’ll have to rely on a complex spread that is open to interpretation.

When You Should NOT Use Qimen

For all its strengths, qimen comes with a number of limitations too. By understanding them, you will be able to pick the right tool for the job.

You Need to Explore Multiple Questions

Qimen is a powerful tool to develop a holistic view of a single situation. When you try to use a qimen chart to explore two or more situations, however, its usefulness quickly fades.

This is tied into how qimen is used. Every qimen chart spans a period of two hours. At the moment a question pops into your consciousness, the chart of that two-hour period is the chart best suited to answer it. That chart encompasses the entirety of the circumstances surrounding the question—and only that question.

Professional qimen readers use a simple trick to bypass this limitation. When reading for multiple clients, they use the year stem of the second and future clients’ date of birth. But the more clients they read for, the more likely they will see someone with the same date of birth, but vastly different circumstances.

We believe in keeping readings simple. We only generate one chart at a time, for one topic at a time. To explore multiple topics in a short time, we rely on tarot instead.

You need a broader perspective

Qimen dunjia excels at supporting decision-making within a specific set of circumstances. Outside of this context, its utility is limited.

For example, you can use qimen dunjia to assess a romantic relationship. Reading the chart, you discover that the boyfriend is two-timing the girlfriend and is deliberately deceiving the latter.

This would be enough to drive a decision. But suppose you want to more. Why did the boyfriend cheat on the girlfriend? What is the main obstacle between them? What does the third party offer than the girlfriend doesn’t? Who will be happier with who?

Qimen provides a wealth of information in every chart, but there’s only so much information that will fit inside a single palace. When you need a broader perspective on the situation, such as understanding a person’s motivations, other tools may be more appropriate.

In this case, we would use tarot. One spread reveals the state of the relationship. Other spreads can address the questions mentioned above. In so doing, we can build up a complete understanding of the situation and help the client make the next step.

You want to explore yourself

Metaphysics is a great method of self-discovery. While qimen dunjia can assist with that, it is somewhat more limited.

Qimen dunjia can create be used to create a destiny profile. It can tell you what kind of career you should pursue, the quality of your relationships with others, the state of your health, and so on. It is, however, limited to practical matters, with a bias towards action.

A qimen destiny chart is best used for identifying your strengths and weaknesses, and using that information to optimise your life. If you want to go deeper, such as exploring your psychological state, figuring out your current life lessons, or identifying the obstacles you need to overcome, there are better tools out there.

Tarot is one such method. You can explore these deep questions, and use them as a basis for a journey of self-discovery. Card by card, spread by spread, you can explore who you are and where you stand in relation to the rest of the universe.

Combining bazi and qimen is another way to discover yourself. Bazi gives you the big picture overview of your life. Qimen zooms in on specific aspects of interest. Together, you get a comprehensive picture of your life. It’s why we choose to combine bazi and qimen in our own service offerings.
