As the world enters Period 9 proper, ideas of career and income are changing. Where society used to advocate loyalty to a single company and steadily climbing the career ladder, different ideas of working are rising to the forefront.
Full-time job with part-time side hustle. Transitioning from side hustle to full time career. Multiple freelance positions in quick succession. The old ways of working are fading away.
Perhaps you're planning your own career move, but you're not sure where you want to go. Bazi offers a quick and easy way to determine your career direction in just four easy steps.
The first step is to generate your own bazi chart. There are many free resources out there, such as Chinese Metasoft. Simply key in your time and date of birth, and the software will take care of the rest.
The month pillar governs career matters. It reveals your strengths and affinities. By matching your career move to the qualities described in the month pillar, you know what kind of jobs you should look for—or even create.
The second step is to look at the heavenly stems. This is the top row of boxes in your bazi natal chart. The heavenly stems is the home of the ten gods. You can think of 'god' here as your natural strengths in the workplace. The type of god that appears in your month pillar reveals your career path.
Direct Wealth: Resource and financial management, leadership, revenue-generating activities
Indirect Wealth: Innovation, entrepreneurship, strategy, projects, acquisitions, investments
Hurting Officer: Marketing, social media, public speaking, performance, audio and visual
Eating God: Creativity, strategy, subject matter expert, problem solving, writing
Friend: Coaching, team building, networking, motivation, empowerment
Rob Wealth: Sales, politics, deal making, negotiations, middleman, broker
Direct Resource: Data analytics, research, journalism, nurturing
Indirect Resource: Trend prediction, stock trading, metaphysics
Direct Officer: Systems management, implementation, franchising, large corporations
7 Killings: Systems disruption, athlete, problem-solving, dynamic environments
The third step is to look at your hidden stems. This is the bottom row of boxes in your bazi natal chart, under the animal signs. You can think of the animal signs as a shorthand for certain combinations of elemental energy. The hidden stems reveal these combinations to you.
Some animal signs have two or three elements. Others only have one. For those with the latter, just stick to the element revealed in the hidden stems. For the former, you need to make a choice.
Do you want greater rewards and are prepared to work hard for it? Then choose the main qi represented in the hidden stem. This is the element placed in the centre of the box, usually described in a larger font. Would you rather have a smoother career in exchange for lesser rewards? Then pick the sub-qi, which is the element located on either side of the main qi.
Your future role should incorporate the qualities of the elements in your hidden stems. Here are some suggestions:
Metal: Money, law, military, government, systems, structure, discipline, tools, industrial equipment, jewelry, communication, ground vehicles, engineering, surgery
Water: Movement, transportation, shipping, cleaning, strategy, maritime, stocks, ships and boats, beverages, hospitality, human resources
Wood: Teaching, publishing, healthcare, books, writing, furniture, design, charity, botany, astrology, politics, herbs, medicine
Fire: Technology, religion, inspiration, self-improvement, energy work, innovation, oil & gas, food, public speaking, visionary, advertising, entertainment, aircraft and spacecraft
Earth: Nurturing, security, assurance, insurance, real estate, agriculture, nature, mining, minerals, construction, animals, crystals, feng shui
You don't necessarily need to be part of an industry that falls under one of your favourable elements. All you have to do is to shift your current role—or find a future role—that better incorporates the properties of the elements that you favour.
The last step in this process is to put everything together. By combining the qualities of the heavenly stem and the hidden stem in your month pillar, you will find a guide to your next job.
Here's an example: You have Indirect Wealth in your heavenly stem, and fire in your hidden stems. Possible career options include software development, project management, founder, strategy consultant, even metaphysics practitioner.
Suppose instead you have Rob Wealth in the heavenly stem, earth as the main sub-qi in your hidden stem, and wood and water as your sub-qi. Here you have more options.
Rob Wealth indicates a talent in sales, relationship management and negotiations. You can use these skills to sell products or policies in the elements in your hidden stems, such as life insurance, real estate, commodities, herbs. You can also engage in B2B contract negotiations, affiliate sales and marketing, or even teach people sales and negotiations.
Let your intuition and life experience guide you. Choose what comes easily to you, and career success will also come easily. You don't have to follow these recommendations strictly. Simply set off in the right direction, then make adjustments as you go along.
If you already have some working experience, you already have an idea of your strengths and weaknesses. Your bazi natal chart can help you refine your career search. If you're just starting out, your chart will show you where you can begin your job hunt. As you gain more experience, you will have a better understanding of your innate talent and opportunities out there, and you can adjust accordingly.
You don't have to get the perfect job on the first try. There is no perfect job, only the right job for your current circumstances. People change, industries change, and jobs, too, must change. The important part is to make full use of your innate skills, talents and affinities, to keep growing, and to remain open to new opportunities for self-improvement. With this mindset, bazi becomes a powerful tool to help you acheive your career goals.
This method is just the tip of the iceberg. Even with this knowledge, you could spend months and years trying to drill down exactly what you should do next, learning by trial and error—mostly error. It just gives you direction. It doesn't show you the actions you need to take, customised to your specific situation.
Or you could hire an expert to show you exactly what you need to do to achieve your career goals. This includes maximising skills and opportunities, areas for growth and learning, timing strategic actions, and more. You will get a complete step-by-step action plan that takes away the ambiguity and hassle of learning by trial and error, a plan you use right away to go where you want to be.
