An age of spirituality is coming.

In the West, there was the New Age movement, the Age of Aquarius, Indigo Children, Starseeds, and a resurgence in shamanism and paganism. Chinese metaphysics holds that Period 9 will arrive in 2024, heralding a new age of metaphysics and spirituality. The confluence between Eastern and Western metaphysics trends points to a radical shift in global consciousness.

In Period 9, those positioned in the metaphysics and spiritual fields would enjoy significant advantages. It’s small wonder that metaphysics and spiritual studies are more popular than ever before. Everyone wants to unlock their spiritual gifts.

But the more interesting question is: do you have any gifts in the first place? And if so, what kind of gifts do they have?

The world of metaphysics is vast. There is no way anyone can master every field of metaphysics. Many people aren’t even suited for certain branches of metaphysics. They may be spiritually gifted, but their gifts simply don’t run to certain directions.

Someone may be a stellar tarot reader—but she may struggle to grasp even the most basic feng shui concepts. Someone else may be the greatest feng shui master in the world, but he has no interest or inclination in studying any field outside of feng shui. And then there are a rare few who are gifted in many fields—and so have no idea what to focus on.

Your time, money and energy are limited. You don’t want to run down dead ends. You don’t want to waste years and tens of thousands of dollars studying from gurus and experts only to discover at the end that you simply aren’t suited for their areas of speciality. If you feel a pull towards metaphysics, you’ll want to know what to focus on to make the most of what resources you have. Once you master a single subject, you then have the experience and knowledge to branch out into other fields, if you choose to do so.

In this post, we will show how you can use bazi to discover your metaphysical potential.

Taiji Nobleman

The taiji nobleman (太极贵人) star is the most popular spiritual star in Chinese metaphysics. Its presence in a bazi chart indicates someone who is innately inclined towards spirituality and metaphysics.

The taiji nobleman star is the power of detachment. You are not overly-affected by stressful situations, material pursuits, and obsessions. You are able to let go and maintain an even keel. This allows you to maintain a higher perspective and a calm heart, crucial to metaphysics pursuits.

Being naturally drawn to the metaphysical, you will attract or seek out opportunities to study mysterious knowledge from experts. This is where the ‘nobleman’ aspect of the star comes in. You yourself may one day become someone’s taiji nobleman too, and transmit this knowledge to future generations.

Elegant Seal

Elegant seal (华盖) represents someone who is highly intelligent—and also isolated. Being intelligent, the masses cannot understand him, and he in turn feels he is far above ordinary people.

Someone who is highly intelligent isn’t going to be satisfied with conventional wisdom. He isn’t going to settle for the easy answers. He wants to know, and he knows that the masses won’t give him the answers he seeks.

In terms of spirituality, he is a truth seeker. He will hunt for knowledge from esoteric sources to discover the true nature of reality. This naturally leads the chart holder to metaphysics.

Such a person is likely to be a walking repository of metaphysics knowledge, and may be able to study multiple fields of metaphysics in his pursuit of truth.

Resource Stars

In bazi, the resource stars produce the day master. Strong resource stars manifest as intelligence and intuition: the ability to gather and process vast amounts of information.

There are two kinds of resource stars: direct resource and indirect resource. Direct resource is attuned to the conventional, the mainstream, the logical and the rational. Indirect resource refers to the mysterious, the unknown, the unconventional, the mystical.

Someone with strong direct resource stars is likely to follow a mainstream religion, and frame his metaphysics practices within the boundaries of that religion. Think of a Zen teacher, a Christian scholar, or a Sufi mystic.

A chart holder with strong indirect resource stars is drawn towards non-mainstream practices. He will follow his own path and rely on his intuition and experiences. A New Age practitioner, a modern-day shaman, and a medium are examples of such people.

Having resource stars alone doesn’t necessarily mean that someone is naturally inclined towards mysticism and metaphysics, of course. Depending on the configuration of the chart, someone with strong resource stars may choose to study the physical world instead, as a scientist or researcher. However, the source of the chart holder’s insights may seem uncanny.

Albert Einstein had well-aspected direct resource stars in his chart. He was famous for using thought experiments in his career. At the age of 16, he imagined himself pursuing a beam of light. The implications of this thought experiment led to his development of the theory of special relativity.

Other scientists have demonstrated remarkable insights too. Organic chemist August Kekulé discovered the structure of benzene after dreaming of the ouroboros, a snake eating its own tail. Isaac Newton worked out gravitation when he watched an apple fall from a tree—and also held unorthodox religious views, studied occultism and practiced alchemy.

When well-expressed, the resource stars grant the power of intelligence and intuition—always an asset in the metaphysics business.

Ding and Gui

Ding (丁) and Gui (癸) represent yin fire and yin water respectively. Yin represents receptivity and sensitivity, and these signs are especially receptive.

Someone with a Ding day master has a special condition to trigger metaphysics ability: having Jia (甲) in the hidden stems. Jia, being yang wood, feeds the yin fire, allowing it to shine bright in darkness.

Ding is the day master of inspiration and creativity. Someone with this combination of Ding and Jia may become a spiritual leader or influencer.

Gui is the most yin of all the ten heavenly stems. Someone with an Gui day master is therefore especially sensitive. Such a person may experience supernatural events. He may also possess extraordinary psychic abilities.

If someone does not have a Ding or Gui day master, but has plenty of Ding and Gui in his bazi chart, this indicates sensitivity to subtle energies. The chart holder may not be as sensitive as someone who has a Ding or Gui day master, but nonetheless, he is sensitive to metaphysical matters.

The flip side, of course, is that if someone lacks Ding and Gui, he may not be able to sense subtle influences. While it may be possible that such a chart holder may still be inclined towards metaphysics—especially if he has other stars—sensing and working with energy is not going to be his strong suit.

Yin Birth Chart

In a bazi chart, a yin pillar is a pillar that contains yin elements in both the heavenly stem and the earthly branch. Someone who is born on an yin day in an yin hour can attain psychic ability. He is highly attuned to higher realms, and is capable of receiving information that others can’t.

This effect is especially pronounced if he is also born in an yin month and yin year. The more yin a person’s constitution, the more sensitive he is.

It is said that someone whose bazi chart is completely yin can become a medium. This implies someone who has the ability to communicate with gods and spirits, and is highly sensitive to subtle energies.

This may sound like a wonderful trait to possess, but the flip side is that a highly yin person is also vulnerable to possession and spiritual attacks. Such a person must seek out instruction in spiritual hygiene and psychic self-defence.

Death and Emptiness

When death and emptiness appears in a pillar in a bazi chart, it means that the energies of the earthly branch is weakened. It represents a scattering of energies, of the heavenly stem falling into a void.

Psychologically, this manifests as a feeling of dissatisfaction. The chart holder feels unfulfilled by this life. This feeling could propel him to search for answers—and that includes studying metaphysics and spirituality. After all, metaphysics and spirituality is the search for meaning, which would appeal to someone who feels life has no meaning in a certain field.

The element that falls into death and emptiness determines how it is manifest in a person’s life, especially when seen through a metaphysics lens.

When fire (Ding and Bing) falls into death and emptiness, it creates an image of a star shining brightly in a clear sky. This is someone with the ability to inspire and illuminate others.

When metal (Geng and Xin) enters death and emptiness, it represents clear sound. Imagine the ringing of a bell in a large, empty room. This signifies someone with excellent communication skills.

When water (Ren and Gui) falls into death and emptiness, it represents clear water. This indicates clear thinking and decision-making. This is the mark of the philosopher.

When wood (Jia and Yi) falls into death and emptiness, it symbolises a piece of wood drifting through empty space. Without support, without grounding, wood cannot grow. It decays. This implies someone who is lonely—but by becoming comfortable with loneliness, he can become a mystic, a meditator, or a hermit.

When earth (Wu and Ji) enters death and emptiness, it shows a clump of earth falling through space. The earth will scatter and fall apart. This is someone who cannot hold on to anything and is constantly drifting through life. Such a person could harness this by becoming a wandering monk, itinerant priest, or ascetic, someone who has released all attachments to earthly life.

Case Study

Now that we know how to recognise spiritual gifts in a person’s bazi chart, let’s look at a case study: a woman born in the day and year of the dragon.

The chart holder has four Taiji noblemen stars in her chart, one in each pillar. Ding and Gui are present in her hidden stems, indicating sensitivity to subtle energies. She also has two Elegant Seals, indicating high intelligence. A surface interpretation indicates that she must be extraordinarily gifted in metaphysics.

The reality is that she has no metaphysical inclinations whatsoever.

Surprised? So were we, when we analysed her chart. But a deeper reading of her chart, combined with her life history, tells the full story.

She was raised by atheists. She received zero exposure to religion and metaphysics as a child beyond cultural norms and holidays. In school, she focused on the hard sciences, and did not touch anything related to religion, spirituality or metaphysics.

During the ages of 21 to 31, she experienced a taiji nobleman luck period. This should have been a catalyst to study metaphysics. However, this period also created a Chen-Wei-Xu bullying punishment combination. Fortunately, the death and emptiness in the luck pillar mitigated the effect of the combination. But it also reduced the impact of the taiji nobleman star.

She was exposed to Chinese metaphysics during this period. But she did not study it. It was, at best, simply a Chinese cultural practice to her. She concentrated on pursuing a career in the STEM field instead.

The chart holder’s greatest metaphysical strength is also ironically her greatest weakness: her day master. The Wu day master has four stars that serve as the taiji noblemen: Chen, Chou, Wei and Xu. However, because she was born in the day and the year of the dragon (Chen), three of these stars create clashes, punishments and destructions. Only Wei (the Goat) does not trigger a negative combination.

We see a doubled Chen-Chou destruction combination in her chart. This particular destruction combination manifests as a sense of dissatisfaction with one’s home or workplace, leading to stress, depression, and even substance abuse. Such difficulties can make it difficult to focus on metaphysics.

When the year or luck pillar of the Dragon, Ox, or Dog arrives, it should trigger a Taiji nobleman period. It should give her the opportunity to learn metaphysics. However, they also bring negative circumstances into her life.

For this chart holder, the taiji nobleman is paired with periods of hardship. To tap into her gifts, the chart holder must realise that metaphysics could offer the solution to the problems she faces. But this is going to be difficult.

In periods of crises, many people turn to religion and spirituality. It is a human response. But the chart holder was raised by atheists. She is herself an atheist. She has no childhood or cultural influences to point her towards metaphysics in times of difficulty.

During the year and the luck pillar of the Goat, the chart holder will have more opportunities to study metaphysics—without the burden of negative circumstances to weigh her down. It does not necessarily mean she will take advantage of the situation. After all, she is an atheist. She had no prior positive exposure to metaphysics and spirituality. She has no inherent motivation to study metaphysics.

Why would she take advantage of these opportunities?

Simply possessing certain stars and elements in bazi chart does not automatically mean that the chart holder is a powerful metaphysical practitioner. A bazi chart merely reveals someone’s potential. If the chart holder does not tap into her potential, if she were raised to shun metaphysics and spirituality, if she is too distracted by outside circumstances to focus on spiritual matters, then she will never manifest her gifts.

If you’re reading this blog, you’re probably the opposite of the woman in this case study. You are interested in metaphysics. You may even want to develop any spiritual gifts you have. Your chart may have weaker metaphysical potential than her, but the very fact that you are interested in such matters and are seeking out information about it already gives you a leg up over her.

Metaphysics is a craft. The hard worker with little talent will always outperform the genius who does not develop his talents. You may only have one or two indicators for metaphysics ability. But even that is enough to help you get started on your journey.
