BAZI

Recently we received an unusual request from a client. She was planning on hiring a new maid, and had a candidate in mind. Could we use bazi to determine if she were suitable for the job?

Of course.

The candidate has an earth day master and was born in late summer. Her chart is predominantly fire and earth. Thus, she has a reasonably strong day master.

Her chart lacks water. Water represents wealth in her chart, so she may lack resourcefulness, financial acumen, and, more to the point, capacity for sustained hard work. Keep this in mind; we will revisit this later on.

All of the known heavenly pillars produce the earthly branches, and none of the three heavenly stems are rooted. This says that none of her branches have the strength to withstand challenges.

Fortunately, during her current luck pillar, she has two earth elements. This means that her day master is rooted during this 10-year cycle, granting her inner strength and confidence.

Unfortunately, this also means that the chart becomes highly imbalanced.

A person with a strong Day Master benefits from output and wealth stars. Resource and companion stars will imbalance her. Fire and earth are the chart holder’s resource and companion stars, while metal and wealth are her output and wealth stars. With so much fire and earth, the metal in her chart is overpowered, and her water evaporates.

We don’t have her time of birth, so we don’t know if she has metal or water in her hour pillar. If present, it could help re-balance the chart. Otherwise, it is likely that she will manifest negative traits.

The candidate’s Life Star is 3 Jade. She also has 7 Killings in her month pillar, and an Intelligence star in her Day Pillar. A surface reading suggests she is driven, intelligent and resourceful. However, because her chart is imbalanced, these qualities are taken to the extreme. She may instead be stubborn, cunning and resentful. She will need supervision to ensure she is doing her job, and not something else.

The candidate’s day pillar is Ji You. This indicates someone with hidden talent, but requires someone else to help bring it out to the fullest. She could be introverted and passive, and may undervalue herself. The presence of Yi in the month pillar and luck cycle underscores this: although she has many opportunities to encounter men in her line of work and her external environment, she may feel she does not deserve the relationship.

This again points to a need for constant supervision. She needs someone who can push her to do her best work, and to help her manage any feelings of inferiority before it festers into resentment.

As none of her heavenly stems are reflected in her hidden stems, she is not who she appears to be. Given her imbalanced chart and lack of wealth elements, she may appear to be hardworking when someone is watching her, then slack off the moment the employer looks away. Or perhaps she may feel dissatisfied with her workload, but won’t tell you about it—not until you notice her work standards drop. Once more, she will need supervision to ensure that she does the job well.

2023 is a Gui-Mao year, the year of the Water Rabbit. The water will increase her wealth element, giving her extra drive. However, Rabbit and Rooster will clash in her day pillar. This is called the betrayal clash. It points to the possibility of a betrayal in her personal life—or that she may betray someone. At the very least, it suggests disruptions in her relationships.

The Yi in her chart points to the cause: a feeling of inadequacy and a sense that she does not deserve a relationship. Should she enter into a relationship, she may try to overcompensate for these feelings by being extremely passive—allowing others to take advantage of her—or to find excuses to end the relationship as soon as she can.

Her auxiliary stars include Funeral Door, Funeral Guest, Prison Inmate, Earth Funeral, Calamity Star, Lonesome Star, Solitary Star, Obstacle, Year Breaker, Greater Consumer and Sky Dog. Collectively, they point to 2023 being a year of emotional upsets, depression, isolation and heavy spending.

Any financial difficulties will be exaggerated this year, which can contribute to emotional upset. The auxiliary stars and lack of water will amplify the negative traits discussed above, and may be the cause of the need for supervision and the possibility of betrayal.

The overall chart suggests someone who appears intelligent and hardworking, but lacks the ability for sustained hard work. She needs constant supervision and direction to bring out her true potential. At the same time, she may resent supervision and instruction, the very things she needs to improve herself.

She hides who she is from the world. She may only show you her good traits, and allow resentment and disappointment to fester. She may be prone to negative psychological spirals. In the worst case scenario, she may envy others for being rich. She may feel that she is more intelligent than the client, yet be forced to work for her to make a living. Coupled with isolation and severe emotional upsets this year, as well as the strong fire and earth elements in her chart, and she is like a volcano ready to erupt.

We concluded that the client should not hire the new maid. She will require more supervision and caution than the client could handle.

Why did the client want to hire a new maid to begin with? Because she had issues with her current maid. When we examined her bazi chart, we identified the problem immediately.

The maid has a weak day master. Her day master is wood, but she was born in summer, so her energies are depleted from the start. The wood is then tasked to counter 4.5 earth elements, and is attacked by 2 metal elements. While she has 3 wood elements for support, since 2 of them are in the hidden stems, she is still heavily burdened.

She faces the opposite problem of the maid described above. As a weak day master, resource and companion stars help her, while output and wealth stars hinder her. She has plenty of the latter in the form of fire and earth, but not enough of the former in the guise of wood and water. Water is completely absent from the chart. Not only that, her earthly branches in the day and year pillars counter her heavenly stems. The chart is thus highly imbalanced.

Her Day Pillar is Yi You. This is someone who is smart and ambitious, and potentially cunning and manipulative. Given the quality of her chart, the latter two traits are more likely to be expressed. She is prone to drama and complaining to manipulate those around her, and to take advantage of those more successful than her—i.e. her employer.

She has Death and Emptiness in her month pillar. On the bright side, DE reduces the energy of the box it falls into by half, so her overworked day master has less earth to counter. (Hence, 4.5 earth elements earlier.) However, because the month pillar governs career, this also weakens her career prospects: she may have a poor grasp of finances, and may not believe money is important. Further, the sign that falls into DE is earth. This implies a handful of soil being scattered and dispersed. Working to a high standard over a sustained period does not come easily to her.

Not only that, her month pillar is also pure earth. Earth in the heavenly stem, earth in the earthly branch, and earth as the primary qi of the hidden stem. With her weak day master and DE in the month, this suggests sluggishness and laziness. She may try to find ways to avoid doing more than she has to—and when she does work, she won’t see things through to the end.

All is not lost, though. We see that her month and year pillars are rooted. She is able to see through difficulties in her life… if she could just get over the tendency to give up and act out when times get tough.

Her current luck pillar is pure fire. This should be a good sign. This should indicate a period of clear thought and inspiration. However, because her day master is already so weak, she will just burn up instead. Even worse, there is also more metal countering her and more earth exhausting her in the hidden stems. Thus, she will be even more depleted and face even more obstacles than in the previous cycle.

With water and wood coming in 2023, she may find some relief this year. It won’t be much; there’s so much fire and metal than any benefit these elements may bring will be sharply reduced. Further, like with the previous maid, the Rabbit will clash with the Rooster in her chart, causing disruptions in her personal life.

In a Yi You person, this clash will likely manifest as an increased tendency to manipulate others and act in a calculative manner. The risk of betraying others is even greater for this maid than the potential replacement. She will likely attempt even more theatrics than usual to get her way.

Taken as a whole, this the chart of a person who is prone to drama and burnout. When she feels tired, she is likely to pretend she is even more exhausted than she is to avoid taking on even more work. She isn’t likely to go the extra mile; she might instead find excuses to do less than what is required of her. She may even attempt to get others to do her work for her. She is likely to slack off whenever she can and views work as a necessary evil, with emphasis on evil.

She is most suited for small jobs that do not require much physical effort from her. Anything more will lead to drama. She tends to give up easily and will need constant pushing to get the job done. She is capable of doing more—she just doesn’t want to.

After sending in our assessment, this is what the client had to say:

Small wonder that the client wanted to replace the maid. You don’t want to deal with drama all the time. She was wise to come to us to assess the potential replacement; dealing with her might bring a whole new set of problems into the client’s life. And when you hire a maid, you want to reduce the problems in your life, not increase them.

Bazi is a powerful tool for helping you assess a person’s character. It can be used to assess a person’s career suitability—including her suitability to work as a maid.

When preparing to hire someone for a position—not just as a maid—you need to know whether that person is a good fit for the job. You want to know of any potential pitfalls, or whether that person is a glittering diamond that should be retained at all cost. A CV and a job interview can only get you so far. Bazi gives you the confidence you need to follow through on your decision.

Bazi can also be applied to yourself, to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. When you know yourself, you know what to do to overcome your challenges and make the most of your talents. Your bazi chart shows you how you can realise your true potential.
