Are Your Stars Your Fate?

In late 2022, we attended a bazi webinar by a prominent Chinese metaphysics consultant. The consultant made a series of predictions for 2023, interpreting the annual auxiliary stars that might appear in a person’s chart.

The Heavenly Chef appeared in our charts. The consultant confidently announced that we would gain weight, because we would have many opportunities to enjoy good food. We should enjoy them when they come and not worry too much.

It is seven months since Chinese New Year and we have both lost weight.

While amusing, this points to a deeper truth about Chinese metaphysics: your stars are not your fate.

The stars in your chart represent influences, opportunities, patterns. They represent energy, and energy can be harnessed in myriad ways. By cultivating mindfulness and deliberately working with the energies, you can maximise the opportunities presented by good stars, mitigate the impact of bad ones, and even turn some unlucky stars on their head.

In our case, Heavenly Chef did bring about many opportunities to enjoy good food. We used those opportunities to upgrade our diet. We used extra virgin olive oil; switched to steaming, boiling, and pressure cooking; used plenty of healthy spices; planned our meals according to traditional Chinese medicine principles; and introduced increased amounts of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Whenever we went out for meals, we deliberately chose meals that supported our body types and health goals. Coupled with a strict regimen of exercise and lifestyle adaptations, weight loss became effortless.

Through a thorough understanding of Heavenly Chef and its implications, and by taking deliberate action, we improved our diet and our health—and avoided the weight gain the consultant so confidently predicted long ago.

In this same fashion, the impact of various negative stars and combinations can be mitigated or turned around too.

Bloody Knife is one such star. The ancients viewed it as an ill omen, bringing the possibility of accidents and injuries that lead to severe bleeding. The underlying influence here is the increased possibility of bleeding. You can take destiny into your hands by undergoing surgery, ordering a medical checkup, or even donating blood. When blood leaves your body, Bloody Knife is satisfied, and your fortune returns to normal. You head off a major disaster by initiating a smaller wound, in the same way fire management services deliberately start small controlled burns to prevent future wildfires.

Goat Blade is a doubled-edged star. Those with this star in their natal chart tend to be strong-willed personalities, championing their causes with total intensity. Such a person is passionate, committed, courageous… and also reckless, arrogant, and self-centred. When poorly aspected, he might be an underhanded schemer who will stop at nothing to gain power at all costs.

If Goat Blade appears in your natal chart, how do you harness its strengths while mitigating its negative tendencies? The most important thing you should do is to find a cause you believe in. Become the champion of those weaker and less fortunate than you, seek to be of service to others, and commit yourself to your cause. Your natural intensity will draw others to you, bringing success.

At the same time, you should also be wary of tendencies towards arrogance, recklessness, and self-centredness. Cultivate humility and selflessness, and temper your natural aggression with caution. When conflicts emerge between yourself and others, seek to understand where the other person is coming from and address the root of the problem.

Every problem comes with its own solution. The solution lies in understanding the source of the problem and dealing with it. When a negative star or combination appears in your chart, you can resolve it by taking the appropriate action to either nullify the effect or reverse it.

On the flip side, when a positive star or combination appears, it doesn’t mean that success and good fortunate will naturally fall into your lap. You still have to take action. Without action, nothing will happen.

Back in April, we discussed how you can find your spiritual gifts using bazi. In our case study, we highlighted an example of a young women with four Taiji noblemen in her chart. This should indicate that she has incredible spiritual blessings, with access to many metaphysics teachers and experts.

And yet, she is an atheist with no metaphysical inclinations whatsoever.

Despite the positive stars in her chart, she did not tap into them. She did not learn metaphysics. She did not take up opportunities to study under teachers when they appeared. She did not even hire metaphysics experts.

Here’s another example: a certain individual is blessed with many social stars. Celestial nobleman in his year pillar, noblemen in his day and hour pillars, and taiji nobleman in his hour pillar. This should be someone who is highly popular and effortlessly attracts people to him.

And yet… he is a loner.

For most of his life, he shunned people. He never developed social skills beyond the absolute minimum to function in society. Making matters worse, he has strong Eating God stars in his chart, which indicate high artistic talent and even higher social awkwardness. He is also autistic with strong social deficits.

With these challenges, the positive effects of these social stars are blunted. He may attract helpful people into his life, but they either do not stay or they have minimal impact. He simply could not form lasting relationships with them. These challenges need to be addressed before he can tap into these strengths.

Your stars are not your fate. You are not automatically doomed to obscurity or blessed with riches just because certain stars appear in your chart.
